What Is the Advantage of Robotic-Assisted Surgery?
Robotic knee and hip replacement enhances the surgeon's ability to manipulate instruments with increased dexterity and helps reduce complications in several ways:
- Uses 3D visualization to get a surgical plan customized to each patient without the need for a preoperative CT scan
- Eliminates physiologic tremors to help place implants accurately
- Precise motion control for increased accuracy
When a Knee and Hip Replacement Procedure Is Recommended
You do not have to live with aches and pains any longer.
Our orthopedic surgeons and staff offer expert, safe, compassionate care. Whether your condition requires partial or total knee and hip replacement, we are here for you with robotic-assisted knee and hip treatment options for typically more accurate surgeries, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times than traditional surgery.
You may benefit from knee and hip replacement surgery if you experience the following symptoms:
- Severe knee and hip pain or stiffness that affects daily activities, such as walking, climbing stairs and getting in and out of chairs
- Moderate or severe knee and hip pain while at rest
- Chronic knee and hip inflammation and swelling
- Knee and hip deformity
- Resistance to treatments such as anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, lubricating injections, physical therapy or other surgeries
What Is the Recovery Time for Robotic-Assisted Replacement?
Recovery from robotic knee and hip surgery differs from one person to another. Success factors will be how well you follow your orthopedic surgeon's instructions during the first few weeks after you leave the hospital.
Rehabilitation is essential to the recovery process to help restore movement and strengthen the joint. It is normal to feel pain in the replaced joint because the surrounding muscles are still weak from inactivity. The pain should subside in a few months.
If you live alone, we can help arrange for assistance or to recover in an extended care facility. Some minor adjustments may help you get around after surgery. Here are some of the preparations you can make:
- Excess weight puts additional stress on your joints. If you're overweight, eat more nutritious and well-balanced meals. Talk with your doctor about how to lose weight safely.
- Strengthening your upper body will help with crutches or a walker after surgery. Ask your doctor what type of exercise will work best for you.
- If you smoke, try to reduce usage or quit altogether. Smoking slows down recovery and increases the risk of infection.
- Do not consume alcohol at least 48 hours before surgery.
- Consider modifying your home, particularly your room and bathroom, to make your life after surgery more comfortable. Assistive items may help, such as a shower bench, handrails or a long-handled reacher.
- Secure electrical cords and remove rugs that could become a tripping hazard.
Protecting your knee and hip replacement and general health can contribute to your joint implant's longevity and your surgery's success. Most people can expect their joint replacement to function well for up to 15 years after the surgery. You will most likely need to see your orthopedic surgeon periodically for a routine follow-up examination and X-rays.
