Public Reporting of Outcomes 2019

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

As part of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Standards, each year we supply data onto our website, obtained over time on cancer care in our region.

Early detection and treatment of all cancers results in a better outcome for our patients. “Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in South Carolina,” (www.scdhec.gov/health/diseases-conditions/cancer/lung-cancer). During the time period of 2011-2015, PMC had 398 cases of NSCLC. We compared our numbers with other Community Cancer Center Program Hospitals (CCCPH) and found that our number of cases were comparable to them.

Comparing PMC with other CCCPH, Piedmont had a higher percentage of stage II patients (18% vs 10%) and a lower percentage of stage IV (33% vs 40%). This shows that PMC is diagnosing NSCLC earlier than other similar hospitals.

Overall comparison shows that PMC surgical rates and first course of treatment with chemotherapy/radiation therapy were lower, but in concordance with national guidelines.

Piedmont offers a low dose lung screening CT scan for our community. If you would like more information on this, please contact Lindsey Neal at [email protected] or (803) 329-6884.
