Feel confident that the surgeons working with Piedmont Medical Center have the skill and experience to conduct minimally invasive cardiac surgery in Rock Hill, SC. This approach encompasses many heart procedures and has less risk than traditional open-heart surgery. Your medical team will guide you through the process to ensure you feel as prepared as possible.

Understanding Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

Traditional open-heart surgery is performed via a sternotomy in which the entire breastbone is split using an 8 to 10-inch incision. Comparatively, through a minimally invasive approach the incision measures about 3 to 4 inches. The chest is not split down the middle. Instead, an incision is made on the right side of the chest so that the heart can be reached through the ribs. From there, specialized instruments and small tools are inserted to make precise repairs.

Any form of surgery has inherent risk, but when minimally invasive surgery is an option, many of the risks are reduced. Benefits of this approach are as follows:

  • Smaller Incision
  • Less Scaring
  • Decreased Risk of Infection
  • Reduced Blood Loss
  • Less Overall Pain
  • Shorter Hospital Stay
  • Faster Recovery Time
  • Less Physical Restrictions During Recovery
