Piedmont Medical Center Names Nurse Award Recipient

Jun 26, 2019
Rock Hill, SC – June 21, 2019 - Piedmont Medical Center is proud to announce Mario Vassallo is the hospital’s latest Daisy RN Award for Extraordinary Nurses Recipient!

Vassallo began his nursing career at Piedmont Medical Center in 2007. He currently works as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit.

Vassallo was nominated by the wife of a former patient. The nomination reads: “We would like to commend one of your nurses, Mario. My husband was in ICU for a week. We had so many wonderful nurses, but Mario was absolutely the BEST! He has such a kind and compassionate heart. Every time he was in my husband’s room, he was so respectful. He was so easy to talk to. He answered all our questions gently and with much knowledge. We shared stories about our dogs and our families. He made us feel cared about. One day, my husband went down to surgery and Mario came to check on me to see if I had eaten lunch because I had been there since early morning. He even brought me a drink! Every day he was with us, he made us both feel important. He was such a blessing to us during that difficult time. He is an amazing nurse!”

The Daisy Award was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, a cancer patient who lost his battle after a brief period of time. The family was so impressed with the care and compassion the staff showed Patrick, they stated a foundation to have a way to honor nurses who demonstrate clinical excellence in a caring and compassionate manor.

“Mario is a role model, an excellent leader, always educating and always helping all employees,” said Amanda Clements, Director of Critical Care Services. “He is very well-versed in his career and life in general. He is an excellent team player and team leader. He is very patient and comfortable with his patients and staff. Nurses strive to be like him.”
