Volunteer Program

Some of the most visible and valuable people at Piedmont Medical Center are its volunteers. These special people volunteer their time and efforts to help us ensure quality service at Piedmont. Nearly 200 men and women from the surrounding area are members of Piedmont's Volunteer Auxiliary, and they're always looking for individuals who share their commitment to service to join our family.

Who Volunteers at Piedmont Medical Center?

Volunteers at Piedmont are men and women, ranging in age from teens to senior citizens. They are students, homemakers, retirees as well as professionals with full- and part-time jobs interested in giving back to the community through volunteerism. Volunteers work in various departments in the hospital and have different kinds of responsibilities, such as escorting patients, or working in the various admitting departments helping families. They also deliver flowers to patient rooms and help at our front desk.

Summer Teen Volunteer Program

Thank you for your interest in the Summer Teen Volunteer Services Program at Piedmont Medical Center! Joining the dedicated team of teen volunteers can be a very rewarding experience for you. We are quite proud of the many volunteers who make our program such a great success every day and appreciate your interest in assisting us.

Participation Requirements

• Students must have completed at least one Health Care related course.
• Transcript showing all classes and grades with healthcare related courses highlighted
• Attendance record
• A healthcare-related teacher recommendation (more than one can be obtained)
• An essay on why they want to volunteer at Piedmont Medical Center
• Be able to volunteer for one four hour session per week

Students are strongly encouraged to contact their guidance counselors in York County and Rock Hill Schools to obtain an application and assistance with the above requirements. The Volunteer Office can also be contacted to request an application as well.

PMC will begin taking applications for the summer session beginning March 15 through April 19.

The Summer Session will begin in early June and end in early August. Dates are still being determined.

Why consider becoming a volunteer?

People volunteer at Piedmont for different reasons. Some want to learn new skills, strengthen old ones, or explore career opportunities in health care. Volunteering involves communicating with people in need, keeping busy, sharing interests and extending a helping hand.

How can you become a volunteer?

Call the Volunteer Services Department at 803-329-6828 and make an appointment with our Volunteer Coordinator. You will be invited to complete an application. Through your personal interview, she will help direct your energies, talents and interests. Before you begin, you will be required to attend a hospital orientation session.

Other programs

In addition to their volunteer efforts, members of Piedmont's Volunteer Auxiliary support Piedmont's mission through a variety of programs aimed at benefiting the community. These include:

• Scholarship Program 
  Each year, the volunteers offer $10,000 to $12,000 in scholarships for local graduating seniors (York County residents) pursuing an education in the healthcare field and for Piedmont employees seeking to advance their healthcare careers through continuing education.
• Lights for Love 
  During the holiday season, the volunteers sponsor a fundraising event in which anyone interested can purchase a light on the Christmas tree in honor, recognition or remembrance of a special someone. Proceeds raised benefit the Scholarship program.
• Gift Shop 
  The hospital gift shop provides a variety of merchandise for patients, visitors and employees and is managed entirely by the Volunteer Auxiliary. It is located on the ground floor if the Women's Center. Proceeds raised benefit the Scholarship program.
• Annual Book Fair and Jewelry Sale 
  Twice a year, volunteers schedule both book and jewelry sales at Piedmont for the employees and visitors. Proceeds benefit the Scholarship program.
• Born to Read 
  Trained Born to Read volunteers visit new parents at Piedmont and explain that one of the greatest "free" gifts the parent can give their child is the gift of language by reading, talking, listening and playing with their child every day. This program was modeled after the National Born to Read program.
• The Mended Hearts 
  These are people who are trained Mended Hearts volunteers that visit patients while in the hospital to answer questions, be of moral support and to help make the time through treatment and recovery easier for the patient and family.
• The New Attitude Room 
  A special room that is staffed by trained volunteers offers free wigs, scarves and accessories to women experiencing the effects of cancer treatment.
