Electrophysiology

As a part of our high-quality cardiac health care, we are proud to offer our patients York County’s only cardiac electrophysiology program. Dr. Arun Kundra, our on-staff electrophysiologist, uses innovative technologies to diagnose and treat interruptions and irregularities in heart rhythm.

Electrophysiology is the science of the heart’s electrical currents, from the heart muscle and tissue, through each muscle contraction. Potential patients may suffer from heart issues like arrhythmia or severe heart disease.

Heart conditions that can be diagnosed using the electrophysiology program include:

  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Supraventricular tachycardia
  • Ventricular tachycardia
  • Sick sinus syndrome
  • Heart blockage
  • Pacemaker or defibrillator malfunction
  • Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome

A Minimally Invasive Diagnostic Procedure

An electrophysiology study can be conducted for many reasons beyond just diagnosing a specific condition.  If you are known to have a heart condition already, a study may also be conducted to determine the best course of treatment or review your response to certain medications.  Often we use an electrophysiology study as a method to check the heart before placing a pacemaker or an implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

Treating Your Electrophysiological Heart Condition

After diagnosis, your doctor will decide on recommended treatment options which may include anti-arrhythmic or blood thinner medications, or a surgical approach that is minimally invasive. Piedmont offers options such as:

  • Ablation for supraventricular tachycardia & Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome
  • AV node ablation
  • Defibrillator & bi-ventricular defibrillator implantation
  • Laser lead extraction
  • Pacemaker implantation
