Shared Governance Model

Based on research and guidance from the chief nursing officer, the Shared Governance Committee recommended the “councilor” model for Piedmont Medical Center.

The councilor model is designed to use department level councils as a method to coordinate clinical and administrative activities.

The Shared Governance council structure consists of:

  • Collaborative Nursing Leadership
  • Nursing Practice and Scheduling (ad hoc)
  • Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)
  • Evidence-based Nursing Research
  • Retention, Recognition and Recruitment
  • Nursing Education

The chief nursing officer will have direct relationships with all councils to establish standardization, regulation compliance, and to ensure best practice outcomes.

Piedmont Shared Governance: Making a Difference

Shared Governance is a planned approach to ensure that staff nurses are involved in their practice. The Shared Governance model integrates the nursing core values and philosophy of nursing into the council structure to move the professional practice of nursing and achieve excellence in patient care. Shared Governance promotes nursing professional growth through the principles of partnership, ownership, leadership and accountability. These principles are synergistic with PMC nursing core values and philosophy of nursing.
