Orthopaedics at Piedmont Medical Center:
Expert Treatment of the Spine and Back
The Orthopaedic specialists at Piedmont Medical Center of Rock Hill SC have the skill and experience to treat the various acute conditions of the spine and back.
Almost everyone experiences back pain at some time in his or her life. Low back pain is the second most common neurological ailment in the U.S., behind headaches. Back pain is also the second most common reason people see their doctor, behind colds and the flu.
Most back pain is caused by muscle weakness resulting from a combination of overuse, muscle strain and injury to the muscles, ligaments and discs in the back. The pain usually follows an injury to the back, but pain may be caused by degenerative conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis or other bone diseases, viral infections or congenital abnormalities.
Are You at Risk for Back Pain?
Yes, if you:
· Are older than 30
· Are pregnant
· Feel stressed or depressed
· Have a low tolerance for pain
· Have arthritis or osteoporosis
· Have bad posture
· Smoke, don’t exercise or are overweight
· Have a job that requires a lot of heavy lifting, bending or twisting, or whole body vibration (like driving a truck or using a sandblaster)
The Orthopaedic Specialists at Piedmont Medical Center are able to treat many spine and back conditions including:
· Cervical and lumbar disk herniation: Disc disease is due to a change in the structure of the normal disc. Most of the time, disc disease comes as a result of aging and the degeneration that occurs within the disc. Occasionally, severe trauma can cause a normal disc to herniate. Trauma may also cause an already herniated disc to worsen.
· Congenital deformities of the spine
· Degenerative disease of the spine
· Occupational injuries to the spine
· Osteoporosis: A condition that develops when bone is no longer replaced as quickly as it is removed.
· Rheumatoid Arthritis: An inflammatory disease that involves the lining of the joint (synovium). The inflammation often affects the joints of the hands and the feet and tends to occur equally on both sides of the body.
