 | | | Last year’s Duck Derby winner stands poised to give up his wreath of roses as this year’s finalists line up for the race. | | | |
Some swam sideways, some swam upside down, but swim they did.
More than 200 rubber ducks paddled for the roses recently in Piedmont’s Second Annual Duck Derby for United Way.
And the winning duck – by a bill – was owned by Trinica Dayton, a nurse in Piedmont Women’s Center. Her duck then waddled to the winner’s circle where a wreath of roses was placed around his neck. (And Trinica received lunch for 10 friends.)
“Our employees have had great fun with the races since we started them last year, and we’ve raised hundreds of dollars for United Way,” says Kim Brock, who chairs Piedmont’s United Way campaign. “It’s amazing how excited we get cheering for our favorite and how many lame duck jokes you hear.”
To receive a duck, an employee or group must donate $100 to United Way. Prior to the final races, staff may purchase tickets for $1 each in support of the duck they believe will win.
“In our eyes, all these ducks are thoroughbreds because they swam for a wonderful cause,” Kim says. |
