New scholarship in memory of long-time auxiliary member also announced

The Volunteer Auxiliary at Piedmont Medical Center has awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarships to five students from York County who are entering health care. The scholarships – totaling $23,000 – are a major annual project for the 150-member Auxiliary, which raises money by operating Piedmont’s gift shop and by sponsoring a variety of other fundraising activities throughout the year.

Winners of the W.B. Ward Scholarship are Nicole Walker, daughter of Vickie Walker, who plans to attend the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg, and Heather Helton, daughter of Mark and Glenda Helton, who plans to attend the University of South Carolina. The scholarship, which is designated for nursing students, is $1,000 per semester.

Winners of the Lights for Love Scholarship are Krupa Patel, daughter of Jyoce (correct spelling) and Bhogi Patel, who plans to attend the University of South Carolina, and Haley Roberts, daughter of Lisa and Tony Roberts, who plans to attend Clemson University. The scholarship, which is designated for students in healthcare-related fields, is $750 per semester.

New scholarship in memory of Auxiliary member

The Auxiliary added a new scholarship this year in memory of Anne Burns Sanford, a long-time volunteer and former Auxiliary president, who died from cancer in March 2006. The $1,000 per year scholarship is designated for nursing students from York County attending a four-year program in South Carolina, North Carolina or Georgia. The first recipient of the Sanford Scholarship is Ashley Bradley, daughter of Christie and Ray Bradley, who is a rising senior at Clemson University. “Anne Sanford was a devoted member of the Auxiliary at Piedmont for more than 10 years, and her personal commitment to health care and to our community was very apparent to all who knew her,” said Jane Hayes, who spearheaded efforts to establish the scholarship. “We believe this scholarship is a fitting and loving tribute to her memory.”
